How Fast Is the SSD Speed on the New MacBook Pro M2 Pro?

MacRumors cited tests by Macworld and Tom's Guide, which used different benchmark tools to measure the SSD speed of the new MacBook Pros. Macworld used AJA System Test Lite, while Tom's Guide used Blackmagic Disk Speed Test. Both tools measure the sequential read and write speeds of the SSD, which are relevant for tasks that involve large files.

Macworld reported that the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro in a 2TB storage configuration achieved a read speed of 5,372 MB/s and a write speed of 6,491 MB/s. The previous-generation 14-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Pro and 1TB of storage scored a slightly higher 5,797 MB/s read speed than the 16-inch M2 Pro; however, it scored a lower write speed of 5,321 MB/s.

Tom's Guide reported similar results for the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Max, which achieved a read speed of 5,319 MB/s and a write speed of 6,402 MB/s. The M1 Pro-based predecessor scored higher on the read test at 5,293 MB/s, but lower on the write test at 6,168 MB/s.

The difference in read speeds between the M2 Pro and M1 Pro MacBook Pros is not very significant, and users are unlikely to notice it in everyday performance unless they work with very large files. However, the difference in write speeds is more noticeable, especially for tasks that involve writing a lot of data to the SSD.

Why Is the SSD on the M2 Pro Faster in Writing but Slower in Reading?


The reason for the difference in SSD performance between the M2 Pro and M1 Pro MacBook Pros lies in the number and size of NAND chips that are used to store data on the SSD. NAND chips are flash memory chips that can store data without power. The more NAND chips there are on an SSD, and the larger their capacity, the faster the SSD can perform.

According to iFixit, the 2021 MacBook Pro's 512GB SSD is split among four 128GB NAND chips. Its 2023 MacBook Pro counterpart instead uses two 256GB NAND chips in parallel. This means that the M2 Pro MacBook Pro has fewer NAND chips than the M1 Pro MacBook Pro, which reduces its parallelism and affects its read speed.

However, this also means that each NAND chip on the M2 Pro MacBook Pro has a larger capacity than those on the M1 Pro MacBook Pro, which increases its write endurance and performance. Write endurance is a measure of how many times data can be written to a NAND chip before it wears out. Larger NAND chips have more cells to store data, which means they can handle more write cycles without degrading.

Therefore, by using fewer but larger NAND chips on the M2 Pro MacBook Pro's SSD, Apple has sacrificed some read speed for better write speed and longevity. This trade-off might make sense for some users who value write performance more than read performance or who want their SSDs to last longer.

Should You Buy the New MacBook Pro M2 Pro?


The answer to this question depends on your needs and preferences. If you are looking for a laptop that can handle heavy tasks such as video editing or gaming, you might want to consider the new MacBook Pro M2 Max instead of the M2 Pro. The M2 Max has more CPU cores (10 vs 8), more GPU cores (32 vs 16), more memory bandwidth (400 GB/s vs 200 GB/s), and more video encoding engines (4 vs 2) than the M2 Pro.

However, if you are looking for a laptop that can handle general tasks such as web browsing, email, office work, and light media editing, the new MacBook Pro M2 Pro might be a good choice for you. It still offers a significant performance improvement over the previous generation M1 Pro, and it has a faster SSD write speed than the M1 Pro.
